Parent Connections - Disability Project

Note: This project has now ended.
This information is left here as historical background information only.

Parent Connections is a unique information and support service for lone parent families affected by disability that is free, independent and confidential.

The key objective is to ensure that lone parents and their children, affected by disability, receive the services and support they feel that they need.

  • Are you confused by the benefits system?
  • Do you feel as if you are going round in circles trying to find out what you are entitled to?
  • Looking for information on respite, support groups, specialised childcare, Trust Funds and other forms of financial assistance and recreational facilities?

How we can help ease the pressure

  • Our Disability Rights worker can advise you which benefits and other forms of financial assistance you may be entitled to and how to claim them.
  • We can provide practical information and keep you up-to-date with relevant news and information.
  • We can put you in touch with a range of national and local organisations that can offer further help and support.

How we have helped

A lone mother was supported by the OPFS advisor through the process of a DLA Tribunal and further benefit claims.

"I was awarded £2000 of Mobility arrears, then some months later I was assisted with completing an Incapacity for Work questionnaire in relation to my IB of £89. This helped me retain my IB. I was then sent a Disability Living Allowance renewal form, which I completed by phone because I live in a rural area. As a result, I retained the Mobility component of DLA, and have also been awarded DLA middle care of £44.85. This award of middle care has allowed me to receive Income Support, because I was then eligible for a Severe disability Premium.

Overall I will receive an extra £92.55 per week, or an extra £4812.60 per year,as well as all the benefits from Income Support – thanks to OPFS!"
